The Story:
Herman, our '65 21 Window Deluxe, was found resting in a VW boneyard in western Pennsylvania.
It was named such by the previous owner, who even went so far as to have it put on the title!
We purchased it sight unseen, but our source was well trusted.
Herman was rough looking, as you can see, but after closer inspection, not quite as bad as we'd anticipated.
Most importantly, the dash and important panels were intact and uncut, and there was minimal rust
damage, an important factor in considering a project vehicle. Even the belly pans were solid!
The majority of the red patches you see are not rust but red oxide primer, which someone had
thoughtfully applied years ago. Still, it needed a full restoration, and it was now in capable hands.
Since we wanted this one to be a driver, we went with some modern updates:
A 2017cc engine, with Dual Kadron carburetors and hideaway exhaust was chosen for the Deluxe,
along with an IRS rear suspension, and freeway flyer transaxle. This bus will handle as good as it looks,
and with a strong, reliable drive train, can now carry you and 6 of your friends effortlessly
down the highway all day long.
